Early life

Richard Liu Qiangdong was born in Jiangsu Province of China. He was born into a humble family that owned a coal-shipping company. The company was however very small and would not enable his parents to give the kind of life they could have wished for. However, although they never gave him anything else, they taught him the value of hard work and the importance of education. Liu went through primary and secondary level education successfully and later joined the People’s University of China University for a degree in sociology. Although he graduated with a bachelors in sociology, he had broadened his skills so much in the field of computer science. He wanted to broaden his knowledge so that he could be competitive in the job market.

Early employment and business

After graduating, Richard Liu, just like many other graduates, went to the job market in search of employment. His first employer was Japan Life, a health products company that sold natural supplements. In this company, Richard had the opportunity to parlay the skills he had gained in computer science. Due to his exceptional abilities, he was promoted several times until he was the Director of Computers in the company. In 1998, Richard Liu Qiangdong left Japan Life to concentrate on his entrepreneurial ambitions. This move marked one of the best decisions he has ever made. He was ready to tap his full potential and build what would become the largest e-commerce company in China.
