Fountain House Applauds Jeremy Goldstein’s Efforts
Mental illness is a worldwide epidemic that takes the lives of millions every year. The World Health Organization as an entire department dedicated to mental health; it’s that big of a problem. The most embarrassing part of it is that it doesn’t need to be a big deal.
Historically, mental illness has always been associated with alienation and embarrassment. That stigma single-handedly causes millions of people to avoid treatment every year. The World Health Organization says that one-fourth of the world’s population will struggle with mental illness at least once. That means nearly two billion will face the struggles associated with mental illness, but how many of them will feel comfortable with seeking help is the real question.
Of the nearly two billion that will be affected, only about 20 percent of them will seek treatment every year. The horrific number of people that will forego any kind of help is something that organizations like Fountain House can’t accept.
Fountain House has been helping men and women facing mental illness-related issues since 1944. Back then, it was only a small group of mental illness sufferers trying to work through their problems together. Today, Fountain House is a global organization trying to improve the quality of life for everyone dealing with mental illness.
Last year, Fountain House held the first annual Healthier Longer Lives for People with Serious Mental Illnesses conference. It was also the first conference of its kind in the world. Over 300 mental health professional gathered to discuss current and future treatments and prevention methods.
Along with the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Centre for Global Mental Health, Fountain House wants to set a new model for helping those with mental illness. Currently, Fountain House works with patients throughout the entire process from acknowledging the problem to rejoining society.
